Research for Writing, Sharing your Research
Sally’s writing workshops are based on the premise that writing research papers is just another example of non-fiction writing. The same skills a professional uses to produce a non-fiction book or article apply.
Researching a topic, developing a thesis, organizing material, writing, re-writing and revising are all part of the process, whether you are a third-grader doing a report about lizards, a senior producing a research paper before graduation, or a writer completing an assignment. We all deal with deadlines, sidetracks, roadblocks and dead-ends. We all struggle to find enough information and then to sift through the mountains of facts and opinions we collect. Filling a blank page with words, and then polishing and cutting those words to produce the best work possible—it’s a daunting task!
Topics for Writing Workshops may include: Books, magazines and the internet: Finding information, and deciding if it’s valid. “I know I saw that somewhere!” Note-taking and documentation. “Drat, I mean draft!” Getting it down on paper, and making it make sense. Why you shouldn’t “re-write in your own words” Avoiding plagiarism while improving your writing. Revision, the art of Seeing Again All topics will be presented in grade-appropriate form. Also available for Teacher’s Workshops: Research Papers without Tears. Basic Research in the Internet Age. Teaching students not to plagiarize—and catching them when they do.
