Writing workshops are based on the premise that writing research papers is just another example of non-fiction writing. The same skills a professional uses to produce a non-fiction book or article apply.
Researching a topic, developing a thesis, organizing material, writing, rewriting and revising are all part of the process, whether you're a third-grader doing a report about lizards, a senior producing a major research paper, or a writer completing an assignment. We all deal with deadlines, sidetracks, roadblocks and dead-ends. We all struggle to find enough information and then to sift through the mountains of facts and opinions we collect. Filling a blank page with words, and then polishing (and cutting!) those words can be a daunting task.
Topics may include:
Books, magazines and the internet: Finding information, and deciding if it's valid.
"I know I saw that somewhere" Note taking and documentation.
"Drat, I mean draft!" Getting it down on paper, and making it make sense.
Why you shouldn't "rewrite in your own words" -- avoiding plagiarism while improving your writing.
Revision, the art of seeing again.
All topics will be presented in age-appropriate form.
